IILA x IOTA Bridging the Gap between OT and IT in Production Metrology
January 13, 2019 6:30 PM Quality applications and production measurement technology (referred to as Production Metrology) cover an important market, see Figure 1. In Germany alone, revenues from the manufacture of measuring and testing instruments rose from USD 28 billion to USD 38 billion between 2010 and 2016. According to a statistic by Statista, a further increase to USD 41 billion is expected in Germany by 2020. Although Germany is an important industrial nation, the figure below shows an incredible worldwide potential in the field of quality applications and production measurement technology. In quality applications and production metrology, measured data???referring to the quality of a product???is exchanged between manufacturers (e.g. OEMs) and their suppliers; most probably in a different variety of formats and in a short notice. This non-standardised exchange of quality data is associated with considerable financial losses, because on one hand there is no reasonable exchange standard and on the other hand cooperation between manufacturers and suppliers without exchange standard simply does not work.

IOTA not mentioned, but perfect use case
January 12, 2019 8:02 PM Published on January 11th, 2019 | by Steve Hanley January 11th, 2019 by Steve Hanley If Volkswagen was not under a court order to install EV charging facilities across America, would it do so anyway? Probably, if its plan to roll out EV chargers in China is any indication. Bloomberg reports the company has formed a new business entity with FAW, one of its Chinese business partners, to build a fast charging network in China. Each company will own 30% of the new venture, with two other unnamed companies owning the remaining 40%. Last November, Volkswagen claimed its new charging network would permit drivers to add 250 miles of range in just 15 minutes. It expects to invest over $4 billion in charging infrastructure and smart car technology worldwide this year.

ElaadNL & IOTA - Self Balancing Grid with Smart Transformers & Devices
January 12, 2019 6:39 PM In 2017, an electric vehicle charger was developed by ElaadNL. However, it only used IOTA as a payment communication solution. Now they have created a new smart charging station which is just one part of the entire vision they have in mind. While this model is intended to be used on a massive scale in the future, the charging station is the first device in their smart grid and consumes a lot of energy. ElaadNL has been trying to find ways to use less energy. However, they expect the station to remain relatively power hungry. This is where the IOTA Charge Station steps in. IOTA Charge Station can be used for machine to machine communication with the car. This means that it could also communicate with the grid. The grid will be connecting devices to a specific part of the grid as well as the transformer which supplies the energy to that part of the grid.

January 11, 2019 7:53 PM We know you have all been waiting for this for quite some time. Finally we have finished implementing local snapshots, a feature that allows you to run your node without storing the full transaction history. This means faster synchronization, lower system resource requirements, and no more waiting for global snapshots to prune the database. While Hans Moog implemented most of the logic behind this feature, reviewing and testing local snapshots has been a huge effort for the whole IRI team. IRI 1.6.0 is not just about local snapshots. We have been working on many other improvements as well, which we believe will make running a node a much better experience from now on!

IOTA Partners with Odyssey Hackathon to Propel Real-world Use Cases of the Tangle
January 11, 2019 6:00 PM A Tweet by Odyssey, the world?s largest blockchain, artificial intelligence (AI), and Internet of Things (IoT) hackathon, posted on January 11, 2019, states the community has entered into a partnership with IOTA. The official announcement was made by IOTA co-founder, Dominik Schiener. The IOTA Foundation looks to carry over the positive momentum it possessed in 2018. The recent partnership with crypto storage AG, announced on January 9, 2019, is a testimony to that. However, the newly-formed collaboration with Odyssey will have its own share of implications for IOTA. Odyssey is slated to host the third edition of the biggest blockchain, AI, and IoT hackathon in the Netherlands this year. The event is specifically aimed at developers, entrepreneurs, and other tech-savvy individuals.

Smart grid and IOTA Self balancing grid with smart transformers and smart devices
January 10, 2019 11:49 PM TL;DR: We built a proof of concept of how a smart grid could autonomously balance itself, by sharing data in a secure way via IOTA and letting device decide if they want to help balance or not, but if they do they?ll get a small fee in return. This is all done by the system itself, there is no human interaction needed to run the system. First of all I would like to thank Ton Smets (software development), Klaas van Zuuren (hardware development), ElaadNL and Enexis for making this great proof of concept possible. In 2017 when we started to develop the Electric Vehicle charger that was solely using IOTA as a payment solution and communication solution, and in beginning 2018 when we created the world?s first IOTA Smart Charging station we already had in mind that this charger was only one part of the vision we had in mind.

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines looking for biometric solutions based on IOTA (or Ocean, Sovrin) during Odyssey hackathon
January 10, 2019 8:07 PM KLM and its partners want to deliver a smooth, hygienic and hands-in-pocket experience for its travelers, as reports show that in 2035 international air arrivals are expected to reach 7.4 billion travelers, doubling the amount of travelers compared to today. Biometric data must be shared and treated in the utmost safe manner, to enable stakeholders in the ecosystem to provide a seamless travel and to securely collaborate on a better traveler experience without the need of a trusted third party. KLM has successfully finished its biometrics pilot at Aruba airport, which allowed passenger to enroll at arrival and seamlessly travel through the airport. The pilot showed the potential of facial recognition. This seamless flow concept requires a one time enrollment at the airport and the biometrics gates allow the passenger consequently to pass several touchpoints (such as check-in, baggage drop off, immigration and boarding) without showing their passport or boarding pass.

5 things to know when building on IOTA
January 10, 2019 9:59 AM Here are a few lessons learned while working on IOTA for the past 4 months. A new address can be generated using getNewAddress API method. The libraries/API do not attach the address to the Tangle automatically for you. You can always successfully send IOTAs to non-attached addresses but it is recommended to attach an address before using it. You can attach it by sending a zero-value transaction. Wait a minute! Then what would be the source address? Good question, in IOTA, a zero-value transaction bundle does not have (or need) a source address. So, your source address will be the destination address you want to attach.

IOTA not mentioned
January 09, 2019 8:07 PM The number of EV charging stations across America is increasing, thus paving the way for wider adoption of electric vehicles. But a lot of the infrastructure surrounding charging has remained complicated and time-consuming. Charging points typically require downloading an individual app -- or in some cases, making a phone call to a customer rep -- before you can start juicing up. It's a faff. Now, though, Electrify America is working on a program that will let you pay for electric vehicle charging simply by plugging in your vehicle. In partnership with Hubject, Electrify America plans to roll out 'Plug&Charge' functionality to more than 2,000 public fast charging stations by the end of the year. Providing your EV meets ISO 15118 functionality standards (which increasing numbers of new models do), using one of Electrify America's charging points will leverage vehicle to grid (V2G) communications, enabling the vehicle to automatically authenticate and authorize a charging session using secure digital communication. No RFID tags, credit cards or mobile apps required. It's a game-changing technology that'll make owning and operating an EV just that bit smoother.

NEO On The Up, IOTA Makes Waves
January 09, 2019 7:06 PM NEO has seen quite a spike over the past day, whilst this isn?t expected to last, it seems to have had a very positive impact on the market and of course, is helping to spread some much-needed optimism about the NEO project. Through the end of 2018, NEO started to see a slight resurgence amid rumours that the Russian Association of Cryptocurrency and Blockchain had requested a formal partnership with the team behind the NEO project. We should note that this association is of course government backed and led, therefore it was no surprise when the rumours started to stipulate that the request has been made by President Vladimir Putin himself.
