Cardano 1.5 released on testnet
Today we release Cardano 1.5 on the Cardano testnet in preparation for the later release to the mainnet. The Cardano 1.5 release is a milestone because it is the last Cardano release of the Byron development phase, which we have been in since the launch of mainnet. Cardano 1.5 is important in preparation for moving to the Shelley development phase. This update brings a new consensus protocol, Ouroboros BFT, which is a key step in the transition from Ouroboros Classic, the current consensus protocol running the Cardano network, to Ouroboros Genesis, the protocol for the Shelley era. Ouroboros Genesis is a major upgrade to the protocol that underpins Cardano because it is first proof-of-stake protocol that matches the security guarantees of proof-of-work protocols such as Bitcoin.

An Art contest for a little fun as we enter a new year Submissions must be submitted by 9:00 pm London Time (GMT) January 28 2019 to this thread. Submissions must be displayed in .jpg format unless a waiver is requested from the judges, such artwork that might be of video content or musical content and any other unforeseen entry that a .jpg would not capture could justify granting a waiver, any request for waiver must be submitted to this thread by the contest deadline with a clear explanation of why it would be needed.

Announcing the Cardano Ambassador Program!
We are very excited to announce the launch of the Cardano Ambassador Program! Cardano Ambassadors are people in the community who go above and beyond and provide regular, consistent and positive contributions to the project. This may be helping translate information on Cardano into other languages or organizing meetups in their local area. Whatever it may be, this program helps us recognize and acknowledge their good work! Furthermore, this program will help raise awareness and promote the Cardano project around the world. At the time of this launch, we have identified four roles that will help grow and foster the Cardano community. These are:

Surprise Holiday AMA with Charles Hoskinson (Video and timestamped questions)
Charles hosted a surprise holiday AMA this weekend. You can watch it here and see a list of the questions answered below. First, Charles started with two announcements. Firstly, he shared a bit of information about the IOHK Summit. In past years, this was an annual event, which was ordinarily only for IOHK employees. In 2018, it was held in January in Lisbon, Portugal. Following this event, there was overwhelming feedback from the community that it should be opened up to the public. Therefore, in 2019, the IOHK summit will do just that! It will be moved a little later in the year from January to the end of Q1/beginning of Q2. The public portion of the IOHK summit will have presentations on the research and ideas of Cardano as well as other announcements. Keep an eye out for the coming website that will have further details.

Summary of Charles's Video Update (Thoughts on Shelley & Cardano Features)
Charles Hoskinson, CEO of IOHK, went live yesterday and shared some thoughts on the Shelley release and upcoming new features that are anticipated for Q1 2019. He also touched on some issues that users may have faced following the latest Cardano 1.4 release. Thanks for reading Happy Holidays everyone! Another terrific summary @maki.mukai, thank you very much! PS: You said the other they you were open for suggestions on how to improve these even more. Maybe it would be cool to add a couple of links at the beginning of each section to the part of the video where Charles discusses them You can find those via the share button on YouTube. Keep up the great work!

Known Issues on Daedalus Following the Cardano 1.4 Release
IOHK recently released Cardano 1.4, which was the most significant update for Cardano to date. You can read the announcement here and the release notes here. Following the release, we have been made aware that some users are seeing some issues so we have compiled the commonly observed ones here with the corresponding help articles that contain troubleshooting steps or further information. If your Daedalus wallet shows an error that the Cardano Node has crashed, please refer to this article: After Daedalus wallet prompts to upgrade to the latest version and you click on Update and restart Daedalus wallet will shut down, the installation of the update will not happen straight away. Building a knowledge center
For the past few days, I have been looking at setting up a blog/website that we could use, as a community, to be able to build some kind of a learning center. Over the past months, lots of stuff have been done by IOHK, and it gets quite easy to get lost among all their publications or what is happening on the different repositories. Moreover, I was thinking that it would be a good opportunity to create a article series to explain what is going one on the different paper for examples. I found it quite a good exercise doing this for Plutus for example, as I have to lookup for a lot of things, and not just go over the subject (skipping potentially important pieces of information).

The Voice of the Community on the Cardano Foundation Board
Having the newly founded Board with some exceptional members with unquestionable integrity and professionalism the Cardano Foundation is finally in very good and caring hands.(https://cardanofoundation.org/en/news/cardano-foundation-statement-14th-december-2018). It is also reassuring to see that some of the new leaders of the Foundation have already proven their true passion, loyalty and efficiency within the Ecosystem in other critical roles. This interim Board will have the challenging task to build up a state of the art Board structure that sustains and efficiently serves the very best interest of the Cardano Ecosystem, while carefully managing it´s resources & assets.

15.12.2018 ? Charles Hoskinson Video Update (Summary Post)
The end of the year video update from Charles Hoskinson comes in from Colorado where he has just returned from PlutusFest, which was held in Edinburgh. Read about Plutusfest here. As always, Charles gives a brief video update about Cardano. In this video, he covers where we have gone throughout this year and some things to look forward to towards the end of the year. Cardano is made by you, the community. And we thank you for that! Awesome summary @maki.mukai, it's really convenient for people that can't watch the whole video for whatever reason. Keep up the good work! Glad to help! If there are ever any suggestions on how to make these summaries better, please do let me know!

IOHK is pleased to announce the release of Cardano 1.4, the most significant update for Cardano yet
Cardano 1.4: Daedalus 0.12.0 with Cardano SL 2.0.0 This release brings significant robustness improvements and resolves some network connection issues which were affecting a lot of users. There have also been exceptional improvements in the amount of hard drive space required to store the blockchain: optimized block storage has reduced the number of files required from 1.3 million to less then 50,000 for one year of blockchain history, with all the performance improvements that entails. Daedalus now supports Linux! This release was tested against Ubuntu 18 and Fedora 28, but it should work with all other major distributions.

Recap: PlutusFest 2018 in Edinburgh, Scotland
This past week was an exciting time for the Cardano project! Plutus and Marlowe, functional programming languages for smart contracts on the Cardano blockchain, were released and presented at the inaugural PlutusFest event at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. IOHK researchers and employees came in from around the world to show developers and the Cardano community how these languages are used and what it means for smart contract technology. To kickstart the event, we were welcomed to PlutusFest by Professor Philip Wadler, IOHK senior research fellow. He started us off by explaining why he is excited by IOHK and proud to be working for the organization. Here, he touched on the importance of peer-reviewed research, which is a process followed by IOHK in developing their products and protocols. Philip goes on to introduce Plutus, which came about from an idea of Manuel Chakravarty (who also spoke at PlutusFest), who noticed a problem of having two separate languages for the on-chain and off-chain aspects of a smart contract. As a solution, the Plutus Platform was created, which uses Haskell, a functional programming language, both on-chain and off-chain. Professor Wadler also gave the crowd an interesting brief history of programming languages.

Lars Brünjes (IOHK Director of Education) on BTC-Echo Podcast (in German)
Lars took the time to present Cardano in one of the most important crypto podcasts in the German-speaking world. IOHK announcement: Cardano Testnet release
IOHK is pleased to announce the release of the Cardano testnet, where developers and end users of Daedalus wallet can explore new features before they are deployed on the mainnet. Using the testnet benefits both IOHK's engineers and third-party developers. Users can use test tokens to experiment with the existing system and learn how to use upcoming features with no risk of losing funds and with no cost. IOHK will receive feedback from users which allows us to deploy improvements to the testnet ahead of the mainnet launch. For more details, please see the Cardano testnet website: https://testnet.iohkdev.io/cardano

Cardano Community Meetup Recap: Boulder, Colorado
Just wanted to share some highlights from a Cardano Meetup I organized in Boulder, Colorado. Overall, it was a great success- everyone who attended had fun (drank amazing beer), great ideas, and learned something. There is much passion out there for the technology Cardano has and is building out, and ultimately how it can help improve the lives of billions of people around the world. I won't get into the details of everything discussed at this Meetup, but we generally discussed the roadmap and current events related to Cardano. The people who attended were blown away by the ambitious roadmap and are eager to learn more about where this project is going! We all had a great time and believe in this project!

Cardano Meetup Recap: Cúcuta, Colombia and Venezuela
We have made the second meetup in Colombia, exactly in Cúcuta. This city is border with Venezuela. As some of you know, Venezuela is one of the countries that most uses cryptocurrencies as a means of payment for its ease of sending and receiving inside and outside the country. Thanks to some members of the Cardano community in Cucuta we have done this event to present basic concepts of Cardano and its cryptocurrency: ADA Just talking about cryptocurrencies, these have had a gigantic impact in this region for social inclusion, in which anyone can receive and send money around the world easily, in addition to the possible implementations of Blockchain.

Updated Linux beta release based on the latest version, Daedalus 0.11.2 with Cardano 1.3.2
IOHK will launch Daedalus for Linux with the next major Daedalus release (0.12.0 with Cardano 2.0.0). We appreciate the community feedback following the recent Linux beta release, and have prepared an updated beta release based on the latest version, Daedalus 0.11.2 with Cardano 1.3.2. Previous beta releases are no longer compatible with mainnet. See this announcement for more context. This beta test is aimed at Linux users who are comfortable running a script in a terminal. This is beta software we are releasing for public testing. If you test this build with Ada we would like to ask: In supported Windows and macOS builds there is a mechanism for fetching update versions from the blockchain. That feature is disabled in this Linux beta release. Consequently, when the production Linux release is available you won't be prompted to update to the next version. Instead you will have to install the initial production release manually.

We are orienting towards a meetup in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Any people from Amsterdam who are happy to help? Let us know!
We are orienting for a new meetup after our Rotterdam (NL) meetup was a great succes. Are there any people coming from Amsterdam who would like to help I am looking forward to the replies! Hope to be able to help and promote when appropriate. Thank you for the offer. I will get back to you when the time is right @Andy_Hendrikx. Might be a good idea to include when (give or take) the meetup will be held, i'm willing to help promote it and will probably be attending anyway . There is no specific date available yet. But i am aiming for February. excellent plan! I will join up, living acros the border nearby Maastricht!
